Genre painting is a type of art that shows ordinary people doing ordinary things. Instead of painting kings or gods, the artist paints farmers, merchants, children, or workers. These paintings became very popular in the Netherlands during the 1600s. The market scene you saw is a genre painting. It shows people buying and selling, chatting, and going about their day.
