The High Renaissance was a short but brilliant time in Italian art. Artists mastered perspective, anatomy, and composition. They created balanced, harmonious, and realistic works. The Mona Lisa was painted during this period, between 1503 and 1519.
Why it matters
Many of the world's most famous artworks come from the High Renaissance. It set standards for art that lasted for centuries.
