What is it?
Sub-Saharan Africa is the region of Africa that lies south of the Sahara Desert. It includes many countries with diverse habitats: savannas, rainforests, deserts, and wetlands. The Black Mamba lives in the savannas and rocky areas of this region. Other animals include lions, elephants, giraffes, and many species of antelope. The Puff Adder is also found throughout Sub-Saharan Africa, in dry areas, swamps, and forests. It is one of the most widespread snakes on the continent.
Why it matters
Sub-Saharan Africa has incredible biodiversity. Many species are found only there. Protecting its habitats is important for global conservation.
