Saint Lawrence was a deacon in the early Christian church in Rome during the 3rd century. According to tradition, Roman officials demanded that he hand over the church's treasures. Instead of gold, Lawrence brought the poor and sick people he had helped, saying they were the true treasures of the church. He is often shown in art with a gridiron, the instrument of his martyrdom. The painting by Bernardo Strozzi shows him presenting the poor as treasures. In Strozzi's 1625 painting, Lawrence is depicted in a red robe, pointing to a group of needy people, with a calm and confident expression.
Why it matters
Saint Lawrence is a symbol of charity and faith. His story teaches that helping others is more valuable than material wealth. Many artworks depict him, especially from the Baroque period.
