Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640) was a Flemish painter born in Siegen, Germany, but he worked mainly in Antwerp, Flanders. He is one of the most important Baroque artists. He painted many religious scenes, portraits, and mythological stories. His style is full of movement, rich colors, and strong contrasts of light and shadow. He also ran a large workshop with many assistants. The painting "The Assumption of the Virgin Mary" was created by his workshop. Rubens was also a diplomat and traveled to many countries.
