Jan van den Hoecke (1611–1651) was a Flemish painter born in Antwerp, Belgium. He studied under Peter Paul Rubens and was influenced by his dramatic style. Van den Hoecke painted many mythological scenes, like "The Judgment of Midas," and also religious works. He worked in Italy and later became court painter to Archduke Leopold Wilhelm in Brussels. His paintings are known for their rich colors, strong contrasts of light and shadow, and lively compositions. "The Judgment of Midas" is one of his best-known works, showing the moment King Midas is punished with donkey ears.
