What is it?
Mattia Preti (1613–1699) was an Italian painter born in Taverna, Calabria. He worked during the Baroque period and was known for his large, dramatic paintings of religious and historical scenes. He often used strong contrasts of light and dark (chiaroscuro) to create emotion and tension. Preti spent much of his career in Naples and Malta, where he painted many works for churches. His painting of Jesus and the woman taken in adultery is a good example of his style. He was also a Knight of the Order of Saint John.
