What is it?
Thoth was one of the most important gods in ancient Egypt. He was the god of writing, mathematics, science, and magic. He was often shown as a man with the head of an ibis or as a baboon. Egyptians believed Thoth invented writing and kept records of everything. He was also the god of the moon. The Sacred Ibis was his sacred animal, and it was often mummified and buried in his honor.
Why it matters
Thoth shows how much the ancient Egyptians valued knowledge and learning. Understanding Thoth helps us see why the sacred ibis was so important to them. Many temples and tombs have carvings of Thoth.
