Pollinator
An animal that moves pollen from one flower to another, helping plants make seeds and fruit.
What is it?
Pollinators are animals that carry pollen between flowers. The most common pollinators are bees, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, birds, and bats. When a bee visits a flower to drink nectar, pollen sticks to its body. When it flies to the next flower, some pollen rubs off, fertilizing the flower. This process is called pollination. Many plants, including the Plectranthus 'Mona Lavender' you saw, depend on pollinators to reproduce. The plant's purple flowers attract bees and butterflies.
Why it matters
Pollinators are essential for our food supply. About one-third of the food we eat comes from plants that need pollinators. They also help maintain healthy ecosystems. Without pollinators, many plants would disappear.
