What is it?
Plant breeding is when humans choose which plants to grow together to get new plants with desired traits. For example, farmers breed corn to have more kernels. Gardeners breed flowers to have brighter colors. The Plectranthus 'Mona Lavender' you saw is a result of plant breeding. Breeders selected different Plectranthus species and crossed them to create a hybrid with unique flowers and better adaptability.
Why it matters
Plant breeding gives us better food, more beautiful gardens, and plants that can survive in different climates. It has been done for thousands of years and is still important today.
