Nocturnal Animals
Animals that are active at night and sleep during the day.
What is it?
Nocturnal animals are creatures that come out at night. They have special adaptations to help them see, hear, or hunt in the dark. Owls are nocturnal: they have big eyes that let in lots of light and can turn their heads to see all around. Other nocturnal animals include bats, raccoons, and fireflies. The Spectacled Owl is also nocturnal, hunting at night for small mammals and insects. The owl you captured is another example of a nocturnal animal.
Why it matters
Nocturnal animals play important roles in ecosystems. They help control pests, pollinate flowers, and spread seeds. Learning about them helps us understand how animals adapt to different environments.
