What is it?
Birds of prey, also called raptors, are birds that hunt for food. They have sharp talons, hooked beaks, and excellent eyesight. Owls are birds of prey that hunt at night. Other examples include eagles, hawks, and falcons. They eat small mammals, birds, reptiles, and insects. The Spectacled Owl is a bird of prey that hunts small rodents and insects at night. The owl you captured is also a bird of prey.
Why it matters
Birds of prey are top predators in many ecosystems. They help keep populations of prey animals in balance. They are also indicators of a healthy environment.
