Natural Selection
The process where animals with traits that help them survive are more likely to have babies, passing those traits on.
What is it?
Natural selection is a key part of evolution. In a group of leaf insects, some might look a little more like leaves than others. Birds eat the ones that are easier to see. The ones that look most like leaves survive and have babies. Over time, the whole group looks more like leaves. This is natural selection at work.
Why it matters
Natural selection explains how species adapt to their environment. It is the main way evolution happens. Understanding it helps us see how life on Earth became so diverse.
