What is it?
Hieroglyphs are the writing system of ancient Egypt. They use pictures to represent sounds, words, or ideas. There were hundreds of different symbols. Scribes carved or painted them on temple walls, tombs, and coffins. Hieroglyphs could be written from left to right or right to left. They were used for religious texts, royal announcements, and magic spells. On the mummy coffin you saw, hieroglyphs tell the name of the dead person and include spells to protect them in the afterlife.
Why it matters
Hieroglyphs help us understand what ancient Egyptians believed and how they lived. For a long time, no one could read them. Then in 1799, the Rosetta Stone was found, which had the same text in Greek and hieroglyphs. Scholars used it to crack the code. Now we can read the stories on mummy coffins and temple walls.
