Franco-Prussian War
A war fought between France and Prussia (a German state) from 1870 to 1871, which ended with a German victory.
What is it?
The Franco-Prussian War was a conflict between the French Empire and the Kingdom of Prussia, led by Otto von Bismarck. The war started in July 1870 and ended in May 1871. Prussia and its German allies won, and France lost the region of Alsace-Lorraine. The war led to the unification of Germany and the fall of the French Empire, replaced by the Third Republic.
Why it matters
This war changed the balance of power in Europe. It also caused the Siege of Paris, which is shown in the painting you saw. Understanding this war helps you understand why France and Germany have a complicated history.
