External Gills
Gills that stick out from an animal's body, like feathers on its head.
What is it?
External gills are breathing organs that some aquatic animals have. They look like feathery tufts on the sides of the head. The Western Lesser Siren has external gills that it keeps for its whole life. These gills help it breathe underwater. Other animals with external gills include axolotls and some fish.
Why it matters
External gills are a special adaptation for living in water. They allow animals to get oxygen without coming to the surface. Studying them helps us understand how different animals breathe.
