Desert Ecosystem
A community of plants and animals that live in a very dry place.
What is it?
A desert ecosystem is a place where it rains very little. Deserts can be hot or cold. Plants and animals in deserts have special adaptations to survive with little water. The Sonoran Desert is a hot desert ecosystem. It has cacti, shrubs, and animals like the Gila monster and chuckwalla. Even though it is dry, many species live there. The exhibit you saw showed reptiles that are part of this ecosystem.
Why it matters
Desert ecosystems are fragile. They are easily damaged by human activities. Protecting them helps preserve unique species and the balance of nature.
