Reptiles of the Sonoran Desert
This exhibit shows reptiles that live in the Sonoran Desert, a hot desert in North America. You learned about the San Esteban Island chuckwalla and the venomous banded Gila monster, and why it's important to protect their home.
What is it?
This exhibit is about reptiles that live in the Sonoran Desert. The Sonoran Desert is one of four major deserts in North America. The others are the Great Basin, Mojave, and Chihuahuan deserts. Even though it is dry, the Sonoran Desert supports many different kinds of life. The exhibit features the San Esteban Island chuckwalla (Sauromalus varius) and the venomous banded Gila monster (Heloderma suspectum cinctum). These animals have special adaptations to survive in the dry desert.
Who used it?
These reptiles are wild animals. They use the desert as their home. The chuckwalla is a large lizard that eats plants and hides in rock crevices. The Gila monster is one of the few venomous lizards in the world. It uses its venom to defend itself.
When and where?
The Sonoran Desert is in North America, covering parts of the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. These reptiles live there today. The exhibit was captured on October 10, 2024.
What does it tell us?
The exhibit tells us that the Sonoran Desert is an important ecosystem. It is threatened by human activities like habitat change, mining, overgrazing, and off-road vehicles. Protecting this fragile desert is important for keeping its biodiversity safe.
Compared to today
Today, many desert animals are in danger because people are changing their habitat. The exhibit reminds us that we need to take care of these special places.
