What is it?
Ancient Rome was a civilization that began in Italy around 753 BCE. It grew from a small city into a vast empire that controlled much of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. The Romans were known for their laws, roads, aqueducts, and art. They had emperors who ruled with great power. Roman art included sculptures, paintings, and mosaics. This terracotta bust is a portrait of a Roman emperor, showing how later artists admired Roman rulers. During the Renaissance, people collected Roman objects and placed them in their studiolos. The studiolo often contained Roman-inspired art and objects to show the owner's learning.
