What is it?
Social structure describes how animals in a group interact and organize. Pelicans have complex social structures: they live in colonies, communicate with each other, and work together to hunt and raise young. Other animals with social structures include ants, bees, wolves, and dolphins.
Why it matters
Social structure helps animals survive by allowing them to cooperate. It also helps scientists understand how animal societies work and how they compare to human societies.
