Throat Pouch
A stretchy bag of skin under a pelican's beak used to catch fish.
What is it?
A throat pouch, also called a gular pouch, is a flexible bag of skin that hangs from the lower beak of a pelican. It can hold up to 3 gallons of water and fish. The pelican scoops up water and fish, then tilts its head to drain the water and swallow the fish. The pouch is also used for cooling down on hot days.
Why it matters
The throat pouch is a unique adaptation that helps pelicans catch food efficiently. It is a great example of how animals evolve special body parts to survive.
