What is it?
Lens grinding is a technique where a piece of glass is shaped into a curved lens. The glass is rubbed against a tool with abrasive powder to create the right curve. Then it is polished to make it clear. In the 1700s, lens grinding was done by hand by skilled craftsmen. The lenses in the microscope kit were made this way.
Why it matters
Without lens grinding, we wouldn't have microscopes or telescopes. This technique allowed scientists to see tiny things and distant stars.
