What is it?
The Middle Kingdom was a time of stability, art, and literature in ancient Egypt. It followed the First Intermediate Period and preceded the Second Intermediate Period. During this time, pharaohs like Sesostris III expanded Egypt's borders, built temples, and promoted trade. The capital was at Thebes. Art from this period is known for its realistic and detailed style.
Why it matters
The Middle Kingdom is often called the "classical" period of Egyptian culture. Many great works of literature and art were created then. The sphinx of Sesostris III is a famous example of Middle Kingdom sculpture.
