Aru Islands
A group of islands in Indonesia, part of the Maluku Islands, home to the black tree monitor.
What is it?
The Aru Islands are a group of about 95 low-lying islands in the Arafura Sea, part of the Maluku Islands in Indonesia. They are located south of New Guinea and west of Australia. The islands have tropical forests and mangrove swamps. The black tree monitor (Varanus beccarii) lives only on these islands.
Why it matters
The Aru Islands have unique wildlife found nowhere else. Protecting their forests helps save endangered species like the black tree monitor.
