What is it?
The medieval period, also called the Middle Ages, lasted from the fall of the Roman Empire (around 500 AD) to the start of the Renaissance (around 1500 AD). It was a time of knights, castles, feudalism, and the Crusades. Art from this period often shows battles, religious scenes, and daily life.
Why it matters
The medieval period shaped modern Europe. Many of our ideas about chivalry, monarchy, and warfare come from this time. The painting of the knight battle is an example of how artists later imagined medieval life.
