What is it?
Chivalry was a set of rules that knights were supposed to live by. It included being brave in battle, loyal to your lord, polite to ladies, and protecting the weak. Knights were expected to be honest and fair. The painting of the knight battle shows knights fighting, but chivalry also meant they should show mercy to defeated enemies.
Why it matters
Chivalry influenced how people thought about honor and behavior for centuries. Today, we still use the word "chivalrous" to describe someone who is polite and respectful.
