What is it?
The Late Middle Ages was a period in European history after the early Middle Ages. It was a time of great change: the Black Death killed many people, wars were fought, but also art and architecture flourished. Gothic cathedrals were built, and universities were founded.
Why it matters
This period shaped modern Europe. Many ideas about government, religion, and art from this time still influence us today.
