Saint Louis
A king of France who was so fair and religious that he became a saint.
What is it?
Saint Louis is the name given to King Louis IX of France (1214–1270). He was known for his justice, piety, and charity. He led the Seventh and Eighth Crusades to the Holy Land. After his death, the Catholic Church declared him a saint in 1297. He is often shown in art as a king with a crown and a cross, sometimes on a horse.
Why it matters
Saint Louis is an example of a medieval king who combined royal power with religious faith. His life shows how important Christianity was in the Middle Ages. Many statues and paintings of him were made to inspire people.
