Cretaceous Period
The time when dinosaurs ruled the Earth, from about 145 million to 66 million years ago.
What is it?
The Cretaceous Period was the last period of the dinosaurs. It ended with a mass extinction that killed most dinosaurs. During this time, flowering plants appeared, and many new animals evolved. The gar fish lived during the Cretaceous and survived the extinction. You learned that gar fish have existed for over 100 million years, since the Cretaceous period, and are considered living fossils.
Why it matters
The Cretaceous Period is important for understanding the history of life on Earth. It shows how life changed and how some species, like the gar fish, survived major catastrophes.
