The 16th century was a period of great change in Europe. It was part of the Renaissance, a time of new ideas in art and science. Explorers like Columbus and Magellan discovered new lands. The Protestant Reformation split the Christian church. Charles V ruled the Holy Roman Empire during much of this century. The bronze statue of Charles V was made around 1550.
