Crusades
A series of religious wars in the Middle Ages where European Christians tried to take control of the Holy Land from Muslims.
What is it?
The Crusades were wars fought between Christians and Muslims over control of Jerusalem and other holy places. They happened between the 11th and 13th centuries. Kings and knights from Europe traveled to the Middle East to fight. Saint Louis led two Crusades. The Crusades had a big impact on both Europe and the Middle East.
Why it matters
The Crusades changed history. They increased trade between Europe and the East, and they also caused a lot of suffering. Understanding the Crusades helps us understand conflicts between different cultures and religions.
