Paul de Lamerie

What is it?
Paul de Lamerie (1688–1751) was a silversmith born in the Netherlands to French Protestant parents. He moved to London as a child and became one of the most famous silversmiths of his time. He made many silver objects like dishes, candlesticks, and sugar sifters. His work is known for its high quality and beautiful designs. He often used gilding to make silver look like gold. The sugar sifters you saw are a pair made by him around 1720.
Why it matters
Paul de Lamerie's work shows the skill of Huguenot craftsmen who brought their talents to England. His pieces are now in museums around the world and are very valuable.
