A system where animals in a group have different ranks or positions.
What is it?
Social hierarchy is when animals in a group are organized by rank. Some are leaders, others are followers. The Guereza Colobus Monkey lives in groups with a clear hierarchy. There is usually a dominant male who leads the group and protects it. Other members have their own ranks. This helps the group stay organized and reduces fighting. Colobus monkeys also have a social hierarchy with a dominant male and other members having different ranks.
Why it matters
Social hierarchy helps animals live together peacefully. It also helps them work together to find food, care for young, and defend against predators.
