Shu Civilization
An ancient civilization in Sichuan, China, that existed around 1200 BCE.
What is it?
The Shu civilization was an ancient culture in the Sichuan region of China. It is known from the Sanxingdui archaeological site. The Shu people made bronze masks, statues, and other objects. Their art style is very different from the Shang dynasty in northern China.
Why it matters
The Shu civilization shows that ancient China had many diverse cultures. It challenges the idea that Chinese civilization started only in the Yellow River valley. Sanxingdui artifacts are some of the most mysterious and beautiful in Chinese archaeology.
