The Roman emperor was the supreme leader of the Roman Empire, which controlled much of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. The first emperor was Augustus, who took power in 27 BC. Emperors were often shown in statues and busts to display their authority. The terracotta bust you captured is of an unknown Roman emperor.
Why it matters
Roman emperors shaped history for centuries. Their portraits help us understand how they wanted to be seen — strong, wise, and divine. Many later rulers, including Renaissance princes, admired and imitated Roman emperors.
