An art style from the late 1700s that was inspired by ancient Greek and Roman art.
What is it?
Neoclassicism means "new classicism." Artists wanted to go back to the simple, strong, and heroic art of ancient Greece and Rome. They used clear outlines, balanced compositions, and serious subjects. The paintings often showed stories from history or mythology that taught moral lessons. François-André Vincent's painting "Arria and Paetus" is a Neoclassical work that shows a heroic Roman story.
Why it matters
Neoclassicism was a reaction against the fancy and playful Rococo style. It reflected the values of the Enlightenment, like reason and virtue. Many important buildings and artworks from this period are still admired today.
