Near Threatened
A conservation status that means a species is close to being endangered.
What is it?
Near Threatened is a category used by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). It means a species is not yet endangered, but it could become endangered soon if nothing is done to protect it. The Southern Cantil is listed as Near Threatened because its numbers are decreasing due to habitat loss and people killing it. The yellow-footed tortoise is also listed as Near Threatened due to overhunting and habitat loss. Other examples include the Rhinoceros Hornbill and the Reeves's Pheasant.
Why it matters
Knowing which species are Near Threatened helps scientists and governments take action before it's too late. Protecting these species can prevent them from becoming endangered.
