Frugivore
An animal that eats mostly fruit.
What is it?
A frugivore is an animal whose diet consists mainly of fruit. The Bearded Barbet is a frugivore: it eats mostly figs and other fruits. The Babirusa also eats fruits, along with leaves and nuts. Other frugivores include toucans, parrots, and some bats. Frugivores often help plants by spreading seeds.
Why it matters
Frugivores play an important role in forest ecosystems by dispersing seeds. Without them, many fruit-bearing plants would have trouble reproducing.
