An ancient civilization in Sichuan, China, that existed around 1200 BCE.
What is it?
The Shu civilization was a Bronze Age culture in the Sichuan region of China. It is known from the Sanxingdui archaeological site. The Shu people made bronze masks, statues, and other objects with unique styles. They had a complex society with rulers, priests, and craftspeople. The bronze mask you captured is from this civilization. Recent discoveries at Sanxingdui have revealed more about their rituals and daily life.
Why it matters
The Shu civilization was different from the Shang dynasty in northern China. Its discovery showed that early China had multiple centers of civilization. The art of Shu is very distinctive, with exaggerated features and mysterious symbols. It challenges the idea that Chinese civilization began only in the Yellow River valley.
