What is it?
Throughout history, people have used objects to show their wealth and social position. In the 1700s, owning silver tableware like sugar casters was a clear sign that you were rich. The more elaborate and expensive the object, the higher your status. Even the fact that sugar itself was a luxury added to the message.
Why it matters
Understanding wealth and status helps you see why some objects are so fancy. Museums are full of things that were made to impress others.
