What is it?
A predator is an animal that hunts other animals for food. The prey is the animal that gets eaten. The Black Widow spider is a predator: it catches insects in its web and uses venom to paralyze them. Prey animals often have adaptations like camouflage or speed to avoid being caught. Leaf insects use camouflage to avoid being eaten by birds and lizards.
Why it matters
Predator-prey relationships keep ecosystems balanced. Without predators, prey populations would grow too large and run out of food. Studying these relationships helps us understand nature.
