Imitation
Copying or mimicking something else, often to learn or to show respect.
What is it?
Imitation is when you make something that looks like another thing. In art, artists often imitate nature or older artworks. During the Renaissance, artists imitated ancient Roman sculptures because they admired them. The terracotta bust you saw was painted to imitate bronze, a more expensive material. This shows that the artist wanted it to look like a real Roman bronze statue. The bust was originally coated with a dark brown lacquer and gold speckles to imitate bronze. Later, the paint was removed, revealing the natural terracotta.
Why it matters
Imitation helps artists learn and also shows what people value. When an artist imitates something, it tells you that the original was important to them.
