What is it?
Biblical narratives are stories from the Bible. Artists often paint or sculpt these stories to teach people about faith. The basin of Moses striking the rock shows a story from the Old Testament: Moses hits a rock with his staff and water pours out to save the thirsty Israelites. This story is about God providing for his people. The Story of Joseph is another biblical narrative: it tells how Joseph was sold by his brothers, became a leader in Egypt, and forgave his family.
Why it matters
Biblical art helped people learn Bible stories before many could read. It also allowed artists to show their skill in telling complex stories through pictures.
