What is it?
In Christianity, the Ascension is the moment when Jesus, after rising from the dead, was taken up to heaven. He was lifted up while his disciples watched. This event is celebrated 40 days after Easter. Many artists have painted the Ascension, showing Jesus rising with angels. The Assumption of the Virgin is a similar event where Mary is taken up to heaven. Nicolas Poussin's painting "The Assumption of the Virgin" shows Mary being lifted by angels, with a golden light representing heaven. Anthony van Dyck also painted "The Assumption of the Virgin," showing Mary rising with angels in a dramatic, swirling composition.
