What is it?
Many artists believe that useful things like furniture, dishes, and fireplaces should also be beautiful. This theme is called "art and function." The Rhead fireplace is a perfect example: it keeps a room warm and also looks like a piece of art. The Arts and Crafts movement and Art Nouveau both valued this idea. Frederick and Agnes Rhead designed the fireplace to be both functional and decorative.
Why it matters
When art and function come together, our daily lives become more beautiful. It reminds us that art is not just for museums.
