What is it?
The American Revolution was a war between the 13 American colonies and Great Britain. The colonists wanted to be free from British rule. They declared independence in 1776. George Washington was the leader of the American army. After winning the war, the United States became a new country. Many paintings, like Rembrandt Peale's portrait of Washington, celebrate the leaders of this revolution.
Why it matters
The American Revolution created the United States. It also inspired other countries to fight for freedom. Art about the revolution helps us remember this important time.
