Light and Color
Using bright colors and contrasts of light and dark to make a painting feel real and emotional.
What is it?
Many artists use light and color to create mood. Turner was a master of this. He painted sunlight breaking through storm clouds, and used warm and cool colors to show depth. His loose brushstrokes made the light seem to shimmer. In his ship painting, the bright yellow sky contrasts with the dark blue-green waves, making the storm feel both scary and beautiful. Turner often painted directly from nature, observing how light changes. Monet also used light and color in his haystack series. In "Wheatstacks, Snow Effect, Morning," he used pink and blue to show the morning light on snow. In "Impression, Sunrise," Monet used a bright orange sun against a cool blue-gray sky and water to capture the feeling of early morning light.
Why it matters
Light and color can change how you feel about a painting. Turner's use of light influenced the Impressionists, who later painted outdoors to capture natural light.
