Glazing
A technique where a glassy coating is applied to pottery to make it shiny and waterproof.
What is it?
Glazing is done by painting or dipping a ceramic piece in a liquid that contains minerals. When fired in a kiln, the liquid turns into a hard, shiny layer. Glazes can be many colors. The Sèvres tea set has a beautiful blue glaze that makes the flowers stand out. Glazing also makes the porcelain safe for holding hot tea.
