Encaustic Painting
A painting technique where colored wax is melted and applied to a surface, often wood.
What is it?
Encaustic painting uses beeswax mixed with colored pigments. The wax is heated until it becomes liquid, then painted onto a surface like wood or canvas. As it cools, it hardens. This technique was used by ancient Greek and Roman artists. The Fayum mummy portraits are famous examples. Encaustic paintings can last a very long time because wax does not decay like other paints.
Why it matters
Encaustic is one of the oldest painting techniques. It creates bright, lasting colors. Many ancient masterpieces were made this way. Understanding encaustic helps you appreciate the skill of ancient artists.
