What is it?
Baroque style began in Italy around 1600 and spread across Europe. It is known for its drama, movement, and emotional intensity. Artists used strong contrasts between light and dark (chiaroscuro) to create a sense of depth and drama. Paintings often have rich, deep colors and complex compositions. Religious and mythological themes were common. Mattia Preti's painting of Jesus and the woman taken in adultery is a good example of Baroque style, with its dramatic lighting, rich colors, and intense expressions.
Why it matters
Baroque style was used by the Catholic Church to inspire faith and by monarchs to show power. It produced some of the most famous artworks in history.
